Looking at citizenship and the role of community organisations, you will have the chance to challenge the perceptions and views of what is and should be available in your community and put some of your ideas out there. The Next taster session is on Wednesday 27th June 10am –12pm at Toxteth Educational Trust

Modern Day Slavery

There are approximately 218 million children in the world who daily find themselves working long hours under dangerous and exploitative conditions. From the sweatshops of the clothing industries to the large cocoa plantations of Mali (to name a few) children are maimed or even killed on a daily basis.

Human traffickers have replaced the once renowned Transatlantic Slave Traders who travelled the globe with their human cargoes.

Women and children are taken from their home and families under false pretences only to arrive at a life of slavery in many forms.

According to UNICEF about 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across national borders which does not count for the millions trafficked within their own countries.

For this reason Toxteth Education Trust have put together this project to provide children with a better knowledge and understanding of ‘Modern Day Slavery’. We have gathered information from many sources including UNICEF and Save the Children to provide teachers of KS2 children with The opportunity to book three workshops devised around this topic.

Other Projects

TET Poetry/rap competition
A poetry/rap speaking competition aimed at children aged 7-11 years from schools within Liverpool held in July.

We feel this would be an ideal opportunity for children to express themselves in a positive way to help build their confidence through poetry using their written, verbal and communicational skills. This is an exciting opportunity for children to show how individual and creative they are.

TET Audio visual course
This is a 5-month course aimed at young people between 13-19 learning music and film skills. The course will be held at TET and at Urbeatz studio in Liverpool City Centre. The Young People will learn how to produce music, write lyrics, record lyrics and promote a music event. The Young People will work to create a documentary to bring life to the lyrics, showing their area and their lives-discussing failures, fears, ambitions and activities.

The work will be used as a medium for change-whether that is a way for them to learn about themselves, to learn about the industry or to create change in their community.

TET Mini World Cup
Held over the months of June and July. This includes 2 classroom-based sessions to raise awareness of various countries including their religion, food, culture, dress and language.

By integrating football into the culture sessions it appeals more to the children and brings an element of fun as they have to design their own T-shirts, that are worn on the tournament day, which represents they’re given country. It also gives children the chance to demonstrate some sort of confidence by helping them to get involved and work as a team and be proud of the country they’re representing.

The tournament day, held at Toxteth Sports Centre is based on a group stage and then on to a knock out style competition.

Cookery

This is a weekly cookery club for 2 hours lasting 20 weeks taking place after school based at the Toxteth Educational Trust Premises, the John Archer Hall Building. Aimed at families and young people aged between 5 and 16 in learning, preparing and cooking quick and easy dishes from a variety of cultural traditions e.g. British, Caribbean, African, Portuguese, Somali etc…
